News:

Game # 7 - Roswell - 3/17/06 (L 0-0 Reg - lost PKs 2-3) For the second consecutive match, the Longhorns failed to distinguish themselves on the scoreboard from their opponent during regulation and overtime and fell to defeat during a PK “shootout.” Kell clearly dominated play for most of the match but could not find the finishing touch in front of goal. The Longhorns earned the lion’s share of corner kicks, but never managed a clear-cut attempt for all their hard work. Roswell surged late in regulation and came close to settling things in the second overtime period, but they too failed to make the most of their chances when their best opportunity rattled off the post. The resulting kicks from the spot favored Roswell in the end 3-2 for the win.

Game # 6 - Wheeler - 3/15/06 (L 1-1 Reg - lost PKs 0-3) In a match that featured good chances and determined defending by both teams, the Longhorns succumbed in the end on kicks from the penalty spot. Kell breached the Wildcat defense in the first half after forward Lauren Corry raced into the Wheeler penalty area with the ball at her feet, avoided one rash tackle attempt, but was brought down by a second defender’s challenge. Rachel Shelton calmly stepped to the spot and put the Longhorns up 1-0 with her well-taken penalty kick. Unfortunately for Kell, their lead would not hold up in the second half. Wheeler attackers repeatedly attempted to exploit their opponents’ compressed defensive formation, and on one sequence got around the last defender to fire one past the Kell keeper. The matched stayed tied at 1-1 through regulation play and through the two five-minute overtime periods. The resulting PK “shootout” was a one-sided affair as the Longhorns failed to convert their first three attempts while Wheeler netted their first three to end the match.

Game # 5 - Sequoyah - 3/10/06 (W 5 - 0) After several probing and tentative attacks by both teams failed to produce goals, the Longhorns got things started when forward Lauren Corry ran onto a nicely weighted pass and neatly finished to put Kell up 1-0. From that point forward, Kell dominated play and time of possession as most of the action occurred in Sequoyah’s half of the field. Forward Cherie Haseltine made a darting run into the penalty area and was brought down for her efforts. The resulting penalty kick was deftly put past the keeper by midfielder Carolyn Craddock. Before the first half expired, forward Christine Devito scored on a determined individual sequence to run the score to 3-0. The second half brought more woes for the home side as the Longhorns continued to dominate play. Amanda Masters and Carolyn Craddock worked a short corner well and Craddock’s dangerous looking serve caused some defensive confusion in the box and was knocked in at the near post by Sarah May. Midfielder May was also involved in the final goal when her nicely flighted cross was spectacularly headed past the keeper by Cherie Haseltine. The lopsided final score of 5-0 hardly complimented Kell’s dominating offensive performance, as the score could have been much worse, but it was a just tribute to the Longhorns’ team defense.

Game # 4 - McIntosh - 2/28/06 (L 0-1) The Longhorns trekked to Peachtree City Tuesday evening and played a very strong McIntosh team evenly until very late in the match. The balance of possession was tilted slightly in McIntosh’s favor, but both teams had chances to break the scoreless deadlock during the first 76 minutes of play. With just under four minutes remaining, a ball knocked loose from the Kell keeper’s hands fell dangerously to the turf just above the six-yard line. In the following scramble for a clearance an alert McIntosh player poked the ball into the corner of the net sending Kell to their first shutout loss of the season.

Game # 3 - Cherokee - 2/27/06 (W1-0) The Longhorns battled questionable air quality and the home team at Cherokee High School on Monday night, and when the final whistle blew a lone goal separated the two sides. Midfielder Chelsea Crigler’s driven shot punished the net and gave the visitors a well-deserved road victory. Once again the Longhorns defended well as a team to help their keepers record a second consecutive clean sheet. Many veterans of the team and several notable newcomers contributed to the team’s fourth shutout of 2006.

Game # 2 - Sprayberry - 2/23/06 (W2-0) After a disappointing season opening loss to McEachern, the Longhorns got goals from midfielder Chelsea Crigler and defender Jordan Springfield to put away a determined and scrappy Sprayberry side. The girls evened their post-jamboree record at 1-1, and they showed signs of confidence and strength in all parts of the formation. The longhorn defense and goalkeepers kept a clean sheet while the midfield and forwards displayed growing offensive chemistry and understanding through the middle and final thirds.

Game #1 - McEachern - 2/17/06 (L1-3) The women had a tough game against the McEachern Indians. They lost 1-3. The sole score for the Longhorns came in the second half from a direct kick by Cristine DeVito. She place the ball in the upper left corner of the net completely out of the goalie's reach.

Centennial Jamboree - 2/10/06

The girls had a slow start with a 0-3 loss to Lassiter in the first game. They came back strong in the second and third games with a 1-0 victory over Centennial in the second game and a 1-0 victory over Forsyth in the final game.
